Welcome to Room 119’s Blog! We have been so busy these past few weeks. We
have been busy learning our new friends’ names and getting acquainted with the
classroom routine. We start every morning with our Good Morning song, by The Walrus. Your children are quick learners and enjoy singing and dancing to the song. Ask them to show you, it is really a great song to begin our day!
In language arts we learned the letters S and A, and the sounds they make. We used play-dough to form letters and discussed things that began with the S and A sounds. Our class is also working on being able to retell a familiar story. We have read many books, but two of our favorites have been The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn, and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See, by Eric Carle. The children helped retell the Brown Bear story with felt characters.

During Math we learned to sort objects by color, duplicate patterns, and practiced our numbers. The class explored color patterns with unifix cubes and enjoyed matching the colored blocks with the sheets given. We also introduced the numbers 1 and 2. With each number we focused on the value of the number, identifying the number, and learning to write the number. We used unifix cubes and colored fish to count out the value of a given number and also to practice sorting.
In Science class we learned to match objects by color or shape. We observed and discussed the changes in the weather. We decided to name our Weather person Buddy. Every day we dressed Buddy according to the weather we observed outside our window and the clothes we wore to school.
In Art we investigated and participated in activities using visual art materials. We did Pool Painting where we each were able to pick a color to add to the pool. Each student chose a ball to drop into the pool. We then had to cooperate in lifting the pool and allowing the different grooves in each ball to create the painting. It was so exciting to see the colors mix together and form new colors.
We engaged in cooperative play as a group. We have learned to take turns, share our toys and ask for help when we need it. We have begun to form friendships and help each other out. We have had a fun start to the school year and enjoy playing Kitchen/House, Literacy Center and in the Gross Motor Room. Friendship bonds are forming!
