December 5, 2016 to December 16, 2016

December has flown by. It has been a busy two weeks discovering the different types of snow. Okay there is only one kind of real snow but we had fun playing with pretend snow. Our dramatic play area was hit with a blizzard. The blizzard was made out of pillow stuffing. The children had fun shoveling the snow, making snowballs, and throwing the snow. After the snow was all done being shoveled our dramatic play area became an igloo. The children enjoyed going into the igloo and playing.
Shoveling snow is tiring.
It is nice and warm in my igloo.
How high can you throw your snowball
To go with our snow we had even more snow in the sensory table. We made snow out of conditioner and baking soda. The class enjoyed playing with that snow because it felt a little cold but not cold enough to freeze your hands. We did eventually add real snow to the sensory table. There were animals and cups in the snow. They had fun burying the animals and packing the snow in the cups even though their hands did get cold. We talked about how snow is rain that is frozen. We did an experiment with basters, snow, animals frozen in ice (icebergs), and warm water. We asked the children what would happen if we put warm water on the snow or on the iceberg. They weren’t sure what would happen so we showed them.  The children would suck up the warm water with the basters and put in on the icebergs to help the animals escape. They enjoyed using the basters and were able to help the animals escape.

I didn't know it could be so much fun to melt ice and snow.

This is cold!
I didn't know you could make snow!
Playing in home made snow.

To go with our cold weather, we played a hot chocolate game. The mugs of hot chocolate had a number written on them. The children had to put that number of marshmallows on the mug.

Hot chocolate game.

We also practice sorting our shapes. You had to put the correct shape into the box that was shaped like the shape.

Where does this shape go

We have also been busy painting pots and coloring mittens. Our budding artists had fun making snowflakes by dipping pipe cleaners that looked like snowflakes into white paint and placing it on blue paper. The best part was sprinkling on the glitter or more like dumping on the glitter. We Love glitter!

Using our imaginations.

Hope you have a nice winter break and stay warm.
