Things That Grow

Our last unit was all about growth.  The topic of growth was explored in all areas of our room, especially at the science center.  This is where we experimented with growing all different kinds of plants, and we grew our very own butterflies. We also learned about oviparous and viviparous animals.
They were amazed to see the life cycle of the butterfly unfold under the very eyes.  The children were so excited each day as they observed, measured and logged what they saw.

In our sensory table we grew grass.  Each day we observed and measured how tall it was. When it got too long we even cut it.

We also grew flowers and vegetables too.

In the science center we learned about oviparous and vivaparous animals.  The kids got really good about deciding what animals hatched from an egg or not.

In dramatic play we created a garden that turned into a farm to table restaurant.  This is where the children practiced what they learned at the science center and turned it into food to serve to their friends.

We learned about beans in our class too.  We started growing plants out of lima beans and we sorted and made our name with them too.

We learned about bridges and created them in both the block center and the art table.

At the art center we were so busy.  We created bird feeders and community gardens and explored painting with all different things like flowers, noodles, vegetables and plastic eggs. Every day we experience creating art in a different way.

We also practiced using the muscles in our hands when we learned how to write our names in chinese calligraphy.

Ending our year on the topic of growth is a perfect one for our class.  We have seen growth not only in our curriculum that we taught but also in each one of our students.  Everyone of them has grown so much physically, academically and socially.  It has been such a treat to watch.  Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity to share this precious time with you.

Looking ahead
